Creating Viral Photos

Creating Viral Photos

I was recently contacted by Google Maps saying that a photo I uploaded had gone viral and had reached over 100 million views, which was astounding. The photo in question was taken at the Tate Modern, a world famous art gallery in London, housing the United Kingdom’s national collection of international modern and contemporary art.

I was fortunate enough to arrive as the doors opened and got a stunning photo of the interior. Below is the photo, I actually took a screen grab of it when I logged into Google Maps. If you click on the photo it will take you to my uploaded image.

Many critics will say that creating one viral photo, is only a fluke in fact anybody can get lucky and get a viral photo on Google Maps. I agree, so I am going to share more of the viral photos I have created and uploaded to Google Maps:

Creating Viral Google Maps Photos

With my photography assignments, I get to travel a lot and in my spare time, I always explore and bring a camera along with me. I got into the habit of uploading photos onto Google Maps as a bit of fun, and for SEO for me and my photography website. People have asked me: Can you get paid for Google Photos? The answer is Yes and no. Google doesn’t pay users for photos, but you can build up a portfolio and then offer photography services to businesses that don’t have a visible Google Maps presence. I prefer to do it by having clients contact me because they have seen a photo that they like on Google Maps.

I have also been asked how do I create photos that will go viral on Google maps, here is a breakdown:

Creating Viral Photos

To make photos go viral on Google Maps, focus on capturing high-quality, engaging images that showcase the unique atmosphere of a place. High-resolution, well-lit, and clear photos tend to perform well. Consider experimenting with different angles, perspectives, and times of day to capture interesting shots, especially of popular spots.

Here’s a more detailed breakdown:
1. Image Quality and Content:
  • High Resolution: Use cameras with good resolution to provide clear, detailed images.
  • Good Lighting: Ensure photos are well-lit, especially for outdoor shots, where soft, warm light (early morning or late afternoon) is often preferable, according to a Medium article.
  • Focus and Clarity: Avoid blurry or out-of-focus images.
  • Authenticity: While minimal editing is acceptable, avoid heavy filters or excessive alterations that misrepresent the scene, says a Google Help document.
  • Capturing the Atmosphere: Go beyond simply photographing the place; try to convey the overall feel and ambiance.
2. Photography Techniques:
  • Unique Angles:
Experiment with different perspectives and angles to create visually interesting shots.
  • Popular Spots, Unique Twist:
Don’t be afraid to photograph popular locations, but try to find a unique angle or perspective to make your photo stand out.
  • Capture the Experience:

Think about what it’s like to be at that location, and try to capture that experience in your photo.

3. Practical Tips for Google Maps:
  • Link Photos to Business Profiles:

If you’re photographing businesses, link the photos to their Google Business Profile for maximum visibility.

  • Use Google My Business:

Optimise your business listing with accurate information, including photos, to attract more views.

  • Contribute to Street View:

Use Street View Studio to upload 360-degree videos and photos, which can significantly increase engagement.

  • Follow Google’s Guidelines:

Ensure your photos comply with Google’s content policy and photo requirements.
