How More Than One Skill Landed Me a Lucrative Photography Job
When I first accepted a freelance photo retouching job for Brillier Watches, I had no idea it would turn into a long-term, creatively fulfilling, and financially rewarding partnership. What started as a straightforward photo editing gig evolved into an expansive role—one that now includes photography, video post production, and creative direction. And the turning point? My willingness to wear more than one hat.
The Beginning: A Foot in the Door
As I have mentioned before, I am not only a Photographer and video producer, but I also retouch photos. The opportunity came to me as a standard photo retouching assignment. Brillier Watches, known for their elegant timepieces, needed someone to clean up and enhance product shots. With a solid foundation in Photoshop and an eye for detail, I took on the task, aiming not just to deliver but to impress.
Little did I know, that first batch of edited images would open the door to something bigger.
Opportunity Meets Versatility
After seeing the quality and consistency of my work, the Brillier team reached out with a new request: “Do you also do video?”
Fortunately, I did. Over the years, I’d invested time into learning video production—from shooting and lighting to editing and color grading. So I confidently said yes. What followed was a series of short promotional video edits.
Those videos resonated with their audience, and more importantly, they built trust between me and the client.
Evolving Into a Creative Partner
Today, Brillier Watches are sending me one their latest watches. I have also done this for another client. The brief is that I photograph the watch, both for stock photos as well as lifestyle shots. And of course, I still handle the retouching. I’ve essentially become a one-stop creative shop for their content needs.
This wouldn’t have happened if I had pigeonholed myself into just one role.

In the creative industry, being multidimensional isn’t just helpful—it’s essential. Clients value people who can adapt, troubleshoot, and offer broader solutions. Having overlapping skills in photography, video production, and post-processing gave me a competitive edge. It allowed me to offer more value, take on bigger responsibilities, and ultimately secure a more lucrative, long-term role.
The Power of Being Multi-Skilled
This experience taught me something that’s now a core belief: Having more than one skill is essential.
You become more than just a contractor—you become a valuable asset. A creative partner. Someone who brings ideas, solves problems, and helps brands tell their story across different mediums.
It’s not about being a jack-of-all-trades just for the sake of it. It’s about creating a well-rounded toolbox so that when opportunity knocks—and it will—you’re ready to say yes with confidence.
This is a video taken from their website, to highlight the quality of their product, this is not one of the videos I edited, my videos were used on social media.
How Having More Than One Skill Landed Me a lucrative photography job -final thoughts
The best opportunities often come to those who are ready for them—and being ready means being versatile. If you’re in a creative field, my advice is this: don’t just sharpen your main skill—branch out. Learn adjacent disciplines. You never know when a client will ask, “Can you also do this?”
If you’re just starting out, or even if you’re already deep in your creative career, consider this your sign to explore beyond your main skill. Tinker with video, dive into editing, experiment with lighting setups, learn how to storyboard. You don’t have to be a master of everything, but knowing enough can open unexpected doors. That one question might be your next big break.

That’s how I went from a retoucher to the go-to creative for a luxury watch brand—and I’m just getting started. Contáctame if you have any photography or video production enquiries.
