Real Estate Photography in Altea Old Town: Capturing a Unique Mediterranean Apartment

Real estate photography in Altea and other historic locations presents a completely different set of challenges compared to modern properties. Narrow streets, compact interiors, and architectural quirks all require a more thoughtful and adaptive approach.

During a recent real estate photography assignment in Altea Old Town on the Costa Blanca, Spain, I had the opportunity to photograph a small apartment located right next to the iconic church — one of the most recognisable landmarks in the area.

While the location was stunning, the interior space proved to be one of the most challenging environments I’ve worked in — and it highlighted just how important it is to use the right equipment and approach for each property.

The Location: Altea Old Town and Mediterranean Character

Altea is one of the most sought-after locations on the Costa Blanca. Known for its whitewashed buildings, narrow cobbled streets, and Mediterranean views, it offers a completely different aesthetic compared to modern developments.

This particular apartment, situated right beside the church in the old town, had:

• strong architectural character
• compact room layouts
• limited natural light in certain areas
• tight shooting angles

For property marketing, these types of features need to be carefully captured to balance authentic charm with visual clarity.

Comparing This Shoot to Previous Work

In my previous article on real estate photography on the Costa Blanca, Spain, I discussed working in a small apartment in Albir and adapting to limited space using alternative equipment.

Looking back at this Altea shoot, it’s clear that having that same flexibility — particularly using newer camera technology — would have made a significant difference.

Some of the spaces in this property were even smaller, and traditional wide-angle shooting methods were pushed to their limits.

The Challenge: Extremely Tight Interior Spaces

The biggest challenge in this property was the studio kitchen area.

It was:

• extremely compact
• difficult to position a tripod
• hard to capture full context in a single frame
• prone to distortion when pushing wide-angle limits

Unlike larger properties where you can step back and compose carefully, here every inch mattered.

To achieve the best possible results, I had to rethink the approach — and ultimately, it required two separate shoots.

Why Two Shoots Were Necessary

The first shoot allowed me to understand the space and identify the limitations.

The second shoot was focused on refining the approach:

• adjusting camera placement
• improving lighting balance
• capturing alternative angles
• ensuring the kitchen felt usable and inviting

This extra step was essential in producing images that not only documented the space but also helped it feel functional and appealing to potential buyers.

Balancing Authenticity and Space Perception

One of the key goals in real estate photography in Altea is maintaining authenticity.

Buyers interested in old town properties expect:

• character
• history
• unique layouts

However, they also need to clearly understand how the space works.

This means:

• avoiding excessive distortion
• keeping vertical lines natural
• presenting rooms honestly
• enhancing light without over-editing

The aim is not to make the apartment look larger than it is — but to make it feel welcoming and usable.

Lessons Learned from the Altea Shoot

This project reinforced several important points about property photography on the Costa Blanca:

1. Every Property Requires a Custom Approach

No two properties are the same — especially in historic locations.

2. Equipment Matters

Having the right tools for small spaces can dramatically improve efficiency and results.

3. Time Investment Improves Quality

Returning for a second shoot made a noticeable difference in the final images.

4. Experience Shapes the Outcome

Understanding how to work within constraints is what separates professional results from average ones.

Real Estate Photography in Altea vs Modern Developments

There is a clear difference between photographing:

• modern apartments or villas
• historic old town properties

Modern properties offer:
✔ space
✔ clean lines
✔ predictable layouts

Old town properties offer:
✔ character
✔ uniqueness
✔ visual storytelling opportunities

But they also demand more creative problem-solving.

The Importance of Professional Photography on the Costa Blanca

The Costa Blanca property market is highly competitive, especially in desirable areas like Altea.

High-quality real estate photography plays a key role in:

• attracting online attention
• increasing enquiries
• showcasing property potential
• helping listings stand out

For smaller or more complex properties, professional photography becomes even more important.

This Altea Old Town project was a great example of how adaptability and experience are essential in real estate photography.

While the space presented challenges, taking the time to understand the property — and refine the approach — resulted in images that accurately represent both the layout and the character of the apartment.

Looking back, it also highlights how evolving tools and techniques continue to improve the way we approach these types of shoots.

For anyone marketing property in Altea or across the Costa Blanca, the right photography can make all the difference — especially when working with unique spaces.
